Biology is the study of life and has a long history dating back to the first humans, who carefully studied the habits of animals and the properties of plants. The ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle wrote some of the earliest essays on biology and proposed a system for classifying plants and animals. Still later, the great scientist Carolus Linnaeus (born Carl von Linne [1707-1778]) invented the system for naming living creatures still in use today. His system, called binomial nomenclature, gave every living creature two names, a genus and a species [1]. This allowed for the easy identification and classification of organisms.
Plants and animals were then grouped into increasingly larger units based on their relationships to one another. At the top of the chain are the great divisions of life, the kingdoms: Animals, Plants, Fungi, Protists, Bacteria, and Archaebacteria. Each of these kingdoms is then divided into smaller units: phyla, classes, orders, families, genus, and species. This system can be easily remembered by the mnemonic device “King Phil came over for great supper” – King (kingdom) Phil (phylum) came (class), over (order), for (family), great (genus), supper (species).
Exactly which group a particular animal or plant belongs in was and is often a cause for controversy. The Greeks wondered whether bird, bats, and butterflies fell into the same category because they all had wings, while today we use DNA to determine how closely related organisms are to one another. That became possible because of the work of the Austrian monk Gregor Mendel, who discovered the principles of genetics, which helped scientists understand the method by which evolutionary changes take place across generations.
Today there is a great deal of controversy over the teaching of evolution in public schools, especially in the United States, and the controversy has gone on since Charles Darwin published The Origin of Species in 1859. However, evolutionary theory is the backbone of the study of biology. Every biology student needs to understand the fundamental concepts of evolution in order to appreciate the diversity of life on earth—and to understand how change occurs. This knowledge is especially important in fields such as medicine, where evolutionary theory helps us to create more effective drugs to target rapidly evolving and mutating viruses and bacteria.
