The study of history teaches us how the past continues to affect the present, and how events that occurred long ago will shape the future. Thucydides set the standards for modern history by consulting written documents and interviewing participants to recount the story of the war between Athens and Sparta.
Modern historians often do more than simply recount what happened when. Today’s history makes use of a body of theory to produce analytical works that probe into motivation, cause, and effect. Historians use political, social, and economic data to help draw a picture of the past. As a result of this increased focus on the raw data of history, its study is increasingly classified as a social science, on par with psychology and sociology.
But what you really want to know is what history can do for you after school. A good working knowledge of what happened in the past is part of any general education and gives a person a framework for understanding modern events and “the way things are.” More specifically, the study of history gives the student a range of skills that can be transferred to the modern workplace. For example, the study of history gives a student strong reading and writing skills, along with the ability to critically analyze and understand arguments [1]. These skills, along with the strong research skills the discipline requires, can be carried over to many office jobs and executive positions. In addition, history is a great way to prepare for a career in journalism or the law.
